EU Legislation: What Is Conciliation? PDF E-mail

What Is Conciliation?

If the European Parliament and the European Council can still not agree on the final text of a proposal by the end of the Third Reading, then the Conciliation Committee is convened.

The Commission's role here is to try and reconcile the different positions held by the European Parliament and the Council, with a view to approving a joint text by the end of eight weeks.

If they don´t manage that within this timeframe, then that should be the end of that proposal; the legislative process with regard to that proposal is terminated.
