European Parliament to debate COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics today from 14.30

How EU can boost the development of a vaccine and treatments for COVID-19 will be discussed with Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas and the Croatian Presidency.

The EU and member states are closely cooperating in the race to find safe and effective vaccines to counter the spread of COVID-19. Focus is being put on developing a prophylactic vaccine to prevent the disease and a therapeutic vaccine to be used for treatment. Accelerated regulatory procedures are being put in place so that marketing authorisations of safe, effective and high-quality COVID-19 related medicines can be granted as soon as possible.

On 4 May, the EU hosted the Coronavirus Global Response pledging event, which raised 7.4 billion EUR to boost the work on vaccines, diagnostics and treatments against the virus.

This afternoon from 14.30-15.30, MEPs will give their views on current efforts. They are also expected to address how to ensure access for all to necessary and affordable medicines during the COVID-19 outbreak.
